Allen & Heath AB168 AudioRack audio expander 16×8 I/O is a portable remote audio rack unit for digital mixing systems. The remote audio rack provides 16 XLR inputs and 8 XLR outputs and can be connected to add more inputs and outputs. The XLR sockets have quality and specifications equal to or better than those on the digital mixing system for assignment to channels. Audio connection is via Cat5 cable using Allen & Heath’s dSNAKE Ethernet protocol, allowing the remote audio rack to be located up to 100 m from the mixer or expanded audio rack. The Ethernet protocol provides remote preamp control, and all mic preamps are callable from the digital mixing system. Phantom power LEDs for each remote audio rack input jack.
The unit’s firmware is automatically updated when it is connected to the digital mixing system. The local Ethernet port is an RJ45 socket with an EtherCon locking ring. It is also possible to connect the remote audio rack to a main AudioRack unit to add another 16 XLR inputs and 8 XLR outputs from that location. This connection is via an ‘Expander’ connection and is also an RJ45 socket with EtherCon locking ring. The remote audio rack has an ‘Expander’ port to allow another remote audio rack to be connected from that location. This connection is also a ‘dSNAKE’ RJ45 socket with EtherCon locking ring. This also brings 40 channels to Allen&Heath ME personal monitoring hardware and the remote audio rack is compatible with Allen&Heath digital mixers.
The remote audio rack is of a sturdy steel frame and is designed to be transportable and to be placed horizontally or vertically on the stage or in the performance environment. A carrying handle is provided to easily lift and hold the device while moving. The remote audio rack can also be mounted in a 19″ rack or briefcase. Equipped with a built-in power supply that accepts AC mains voltages of 100~240V, 50/60 Hz, 40W through a 3-pin grounded IEC male connector mounted on the rear chassis.
