Tiffen’s 4 x 5,65″ Solid Polarising Filter helps reduce glare and reflections by filtering polarised light. Sunlight naturally becomes partially polarised due to the reflection of electrons in air molecules, causing light to scatter. A polarising filter arranges and filters this polarised light perpendicular to the reflected light, allowing much of this light to be absorbed. This results in a significant reduction in glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage. Because of the way light is broken down and filtered with a linear polariser, the accuracy of autofocus and exposure in the camera become distorted during use. This filter is recommended when not using exposure metering or autofocus in the camera. It is uncoated and offers about 40 per cent average light transmission. Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology; a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass and grinding it flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000 of an inch.
